The fact there’s not a single UFC champion in the table of the tallest fighters per weight class division tells us that being tall is not necessarily an advantage in MMA.
This is because as a fighter gets much taller than the average height of a division, their wrestling/grappling normally becomes weaker as their longer and thinner limbs make it easier to take them down as they have less strength and a higher center of gravity.
This means they have less balance and it’s easier for someone to get under their center of balance to secure a takedown.
The more beneficial aspect of being tall in MMA is more related to the reach a fighter has, where Jon Jones is the best example of this with his height of 6’4” and his reach of 84.5”.
So while he’s 2 and a half inches taller than the average height in the light heavyweight division, he also has an ape index of +8.5”. This allows him to control the range from above and afar as his reach is so much longer than his opponents. The average reach in the light heavyweight division is 77”.
