Are you wondering what the Eagle FC weight classes are?

In this article, we’ll look at the Eagle FC weight classes, whether they differ from other MMA promotions and the official MMA weight classes, why Eagle FC introduced new MMA weight classes, and what happens if a fighter misses weight in Eagle FC.

What Are the Eagle FC Weight Classes (Divisions)?

Eagle FC (EFC) currently has 9 weight class divisions (men only) from flyweight to heavyweight. The major differences are a welterweight division with a 175 lbs maximum weight limit, rather than 170, and the inclusion of a 165 lbs super lightweight division, which is the first in MMA.

Here’s a table of the Eagle FC weight classes:

Do the Eagle FC Weight Classes Differ From Other MMA Promotions?

Eagle FC weight classes differ from other MMA promotions because they’ve introduced a 165 lbs super lightweight division and changed the welterweight upper limit from 170 lbs to 175 lbs.

Eagle FC adhere to the Unified Rules of MMA and has done so since they started promoting events in the USA.

Under the Official Unified Rules of MMA, a 175 lbs MMA division is a super welterweight division. So, technically, Eagle FC’s welterweight division is a super welterweight division but the unified rules have nothing against a promotion changing its weight classes slightly, as long as they’re an established division.

Here’s a table of the 15 MMA weight classes under the Official Unified Rules of MMA. MMA promotions are free to pick and choose which weight class divisions they promote.

Along with the super lightweight and super welterweight divisions (although Eagle FC call it welterweight), Eagle FC also differ because they don’t have any female weight class divisions, while most of the biggest MMA promotions like the UFC, One, and Bellator do.

One Championship even has a women’s atomweight division, which has an upper limit of 105 lbs, and a men’s strawweight division, which has an upper weight limit of 115 lbs.

Why Does Eagle FC have a 165 lb Super Lightweight Division?

Eagle FC has a 165 lb super lightweight division because founder Khabib Nurmagomedov understands there are a lot of fighters who are too big for 155 lbs lightweight and not quite big enough for 170 lbs welterweight. Essentially, there’s a market for it and those fighters are now catered for.

Why Did Eagle FC Change the Welterweight Upper Limit From 170 to 175 Lbs?

Eagle FC changed the welterweight upper limit from 170 to 175 lbs to cater to the creation of the 165 lbs super lightweight division.

This makes sense as Eagle FC weight classes now move up in 10 lb increments from 125 lbs flyweight to 185 lbs middleweight, where it then jumps 20 lbs to 205 lbs light heavyweight and 60 lbs to 265 lbs heavyweight.

Under the weight class divisions of the Official Unified Rules of MMA, the 175 lbs division is a super welterweight division, but Eagle FC has kept it named the welterweight division as there’s nothing preventing this.

What Happens if a Fighter Misses Weight in Eagle FC?

If a fighter misses weight in Eagle FC they’re deducted 1 point from their upcoming fight; which is applicable to title fights and nontitle fights.

This is a smart move by Eagle FC, as with a 1-point deduction the odds of winning the fight for a fighter who missed weight are heavily reduced. Even if they win 2 rounds out of 3, the fight is declared a draw and they won’t receive a win bonus. In this scenario, missing weight has cost that fighter half of their pay.

While a 1-point deduction deters Eagle FC fighters from missing weight, it’s not much of an advantage for the fighter who made weight. They still have to win 2 out of 3 rounds to be declared the winner, even with their opponent being deducted a point. However, the odds of them losing the fight have largely reduced, which is good for their record and future prospects.

Also, if an Eagle FC champion misses weight before an upcoming title fight, they’re automatically stripped of the title; while the challenger (who made weight) is able to claim the title by beating the champion.

If a fighter misses weight in Eagle FC, they aren’t deducted any of their fight purse, made ineligible to win any bonuses, or made to face many other penalties like UFC fighters are.

Although a point deduction is good, Eagle FC fighters should also be deducted some of their fight purse and the amount deducted given to their opponent. This is an extra incentive for the fighter who made weight to agree to fight an opponent with a weight advantage.

As it stands, a simple point deduction doesn’t give many advantages to the fighter who made weight, except being less likely to lose the fight on the scorecards, and it doesn’t penalize an Eagle FC fighter who missed weight if they win by knockout, submission, or 3 rounds to 0.

The Bottom Line

Eagle FC has 9 male-only weight class divisions, running from flyweight to heavyweight.

Eagle FC weight class divisions are different from many of the other top MMA promotions because they’ve introduced the 165 lbs super lightweight division as well as changed the upper welterweight limit from 170 lbs to 175 lbs – which is referred to as a super welterweight division as per the official MMA divisions.

Eagle FC introduced a 165 lbs super lightweight division because there was a clear market for fighters who were too big for 155 lbs lightweight and too small for 170 lbs welterweight. As the talent pool grows for the 165 lbs division, many other MMA promotions may adopt the division.

If a fighter misses weight in Eagle FC, they’re deducted a point from their upcoming fight, which makes their odds of winning on the scorecards highly reduced – as they now need to win all 3 rounds or score a knockout or submission.

If a champion misses weight in Eagle FC, they automatically lose their title.
